What Is a Whois Lookup?
A Whois lookup is a query that retrieves registration and ownership information about a domain name or IP address. The Whois protocol is one of the oldest internet tools, standardized in RFC 3912. It allows anyone to find out who registered a domain, when it was created, when it expires, which registrar manages it, and what nameservers are configured.
What Information Does Whois Reveal?
- Domain Name: The registered domain and its current status (active, expired, locked).
- Registrar: The company handling the domain registration (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare).
- Dates: Creation date, last updated date, and expiration date of the registration.
- Name Servers: The DNS servers configured for the domain.
- Registrant Info: Owner name, organization, and country (if not privacy-protected).
Why Use Whois Lookups?
Whois data is valuable for domain research, brand protection, security investigations, and business intelligence. It helps identify domain squatters, verify website ownership, check domain availability before purchase, and investigate phishing or spam domains. Network administrators also use IP Whois to identify which organization controls a block of IP addresses.
